2nd. Division 1958 - 1959 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE
". . . . the Chief said for us to take turns. It's my turn to spit and your turn to polish . ."
The "Spit and Polish" appearance of the quarterdeck
is the responsibility of the Second Division, the first
place most visitors to the INDEPENDENCE see.
This is the driving factor in the hard work of the
Second Division. When a VIP visits the ship, much
time and preparation is required from this division to
set up the Honors Quarterdeck. In addition, Second
Division maintains over 200 spaces and passageways,
as well as stand underway and in port bridge and quarterdeck watches.
