3rd. Division 1982 - 1983 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CV-62
"Do you suppose this big hook would really work
for Deep Sea Fishing, or was the Boats just putin' us on?"
Third Division mans "Big Bertha", the ship's Boat
and Aircraft crane. They bring aboard a variety of
items like commissary supplies, and liberty and
work boats, and during this cruise, they even
fished out a downed helicopter. Refueling at sea
is another of their specialties, as they handle all
JP-5 fuel rigs. They are the voice of the 1MC as
they stand the Bos'n mate of the watch on the
Bridge, along with the other deck divisions.
Third Division also takes great pride in maintenance
of a major portion of INDY's Interstate 62
the ship's second deck passageways.

During my last few months on board, I was on
Port Quarter Watch when 3 men were washed
overboard. One man was never found and I
was the last person to ever see him.
Would like to find out more about this incident
and the 3 men's names. We were in rough seas
and all weather decks and sponsons were off
limits. However numerous men were on one of
the garbage sponsons when a wave hit and
washed them overboard. I called in the
man overboard to the bridge and threw
out the flares and life ring.
