4th. Division 1976 - 1977 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE
" . . . Taxi ! . . . Taxi ! I want to go to the INDEPENDENCE"
In Norfolk where the INDEPENDENCE ties up to the
pier, you might take a taxi, but on deployment, your
taxi driver is a boat coxswain from the 4th. Division.
When the Indy enters port, P-boats and U-boats all
go in the water ready for around-the-clock-service.
The 4th. Division boat crews usually work 24 hours
on, 24 hours off. Boats are in the water usually
before the Indy reaches her anchorage and
the endless shuttle begins.
When Indy heads to sea, the pace doesn't change,
only the work to be done. Hulls must be repaired
and repainted, beading must be replaced, the
boats must be ready for the rigorous
schedule required of them in the next port.
