5th. Division 1970 - 1971 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE
Weapons Department
The Fifth Division gunners operate, maintain, and
repair the four 5"/54 caliber gun mounts located
aft on INDEPENDENCE. Although being a
secondary battery, "the guns". with a surface
capability of up to 13 miles range, serve a dual
purpose function of anti-air warfare protection.
The proud gunners also do their thing with the
ships chaffroc launchers (part of the Ship
Anti-Missile Integrated Defense System). Their
job entails rigid inspections to prevent
casualties and assume continuous reliability.
A vast knowledge is needed to know every possible
mode and sequence of operations for emergency
purposes. This is brought about with many hours
devoted to training and actual use of the equipment.
Capable of peppering out up to 35 rounds per minute
with accuracy, each million and a half dollar
instrument of precision electrical and complex
mechanical and hydraulic equipment bears the motto.
"You tell us where; We'll put it there".

Retired from the Air National Guard after 28 years of Military Service. I've always had fond memories of the the USS Independence. First time away from home, what a great experience it was. Since my Military career is behind me, I can now be more objective
about it. I consider the Navy as my best experience,I felt like I achieved much more on board the Independence in such a short amount of time. There
isn't a day that goes by, that I don't have several thoughts
about it. I consider it my best decision I ever made in life. You could not put a price tag on it. I'm still waiting for the phone call to serve again.
Lets take the Indepenence's out of mothballs and start all over again. |
