A Division 1978 - 1979 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE
"Now man number 1 elevator and pump room."
A Division means auxiliaries. And by that,
everything from emergency diesels for electrical
power to fix the air conditioner in your office.
The A Division snipes have the many varied
tasks of manning all the elevator pump rooms
and seeing that they are maintained . . .
operating the stores elevators and running the
oxygen plant for the air wing . . . providing
steam for the catapults . . . and fixing vents
and air conditioners. And somehow when you
try to put these in some order of importance,
keeping the liberty boat engines running
comes out on top!
All of these services demand long hard hours,
but when you need your air conditioner fixed
or the lights go out in your section of the ship,
call an A Division Auxiliariesman.

Sure would like to hear from some old
sea dogs. I'll try to forgive you, if
you're not a snipe. |

Came on board Fall of 76, went on a
Carribean Cruise, and later a Med Cruise as a non designated "FN" E3.
Started out in the Hydraulics shop for about two months, later transferred to the vent shop for about two weeks until the division office found out I knew how to type. Was selected to take over the divisional yeoman position and stayed there until we went to the ship yards in Portsmouth, VA. Later received orders for Engineman A school and moved onto my home state of Washington where I finished my tour. |
