A short story from Stan Richardson which proves
that sometimes the Russians were smarter.

While in the Artic Circle playing war games with
NATO we were on 15 minute alert to launch
with the cap on 5 minute alert.

This was done just in case a Russian Bear was
in the area. We did this standing around on the
flight deck waiting in drizzle and rain for several
days to no avail. Then on the first sunny day,
the ship stood down from alert status.

You got it, we went to General Quarters after
which the Captain had those that were interested
come up on the flight deck and watch the
Bear over fly us.

I don't think that we ever bothered to launch the cap.
