Normally consisting of two aircraft carriers, supported by
two cruisers and screened by twelve to fourteen destoyers
Task Force 60 is the main striking arm of the Sixth Fleet.
In common with other task forces, it is a fluid, semipermanent
organization composed of various types of ships and aircraft.
Extremely flexible in composition, it fluctuates in size as ships
join its command, detach for other operations, or are sent into
port for overhaul, repair or rest and relaxation.
Its mission is to conduct naval operations in the Mediterranean
in support of: United States national objective; United States
NATO and / or Allied interests; and NATO land forces in the
Southern Region of NATO
Task Force 60 is commanded by Rear Admiral Forrest S. Peterson, USN.
He and his staff of 21 officers and 24 enlisted men, along with the ships
and staff of Destroyer Squadron 12, are home ported in Athens, Greece.
The rest of the task force is composed of rotating ships on deployment
with The Sixth Fleet.
