GM Division 1970 - 1971
U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CVA-62 AIMD Department
"We shot a missle into the air . . . " or
"Will this thing fly alright with only three fins?"
Air to Air, Air to Ground, Sparrow, Walleye, Shrike, are all
missiles in a GM Division Ordnance handler's bag. And with
a great deal of careful planning and cooperation, he sees them
delivered to the flight deck for loading. In addition to their
handling and delivery chores, they assemble, test and maintain
highly sphisticated air launch weapons. GM Division, formerly
G-2 Division, is also a proud part owner of the Weapons "W"

Met up with the Indy in Mayport
and then that Summer we went to
Atlantic Fleet Weapons Range
near Rosevelt Roads PR, then on
to the Med. Cruise. Served as
GM forward magazine crew leader
and also on flight deck for awhile.
Discharged when we were in dry
dock at Portsmouth Spring of 1971.

Served as the DCPO for the GM
Div. during the Med. Cruise in
70/71. Did not make the cruise
book because I was a late transfer
to the ship after deployment.
Boarded the Indy at Crete. Spent
a wonderful Christmas standdown
in Athens, Greece with my new
bride; who managed to obtain a
seat on a dependents flight that
was all ready booked solid. I
think a little string pulling
took place by the officers at NWS,
Yorktown where she worked and I
had been stationed in the Fleet
Missle Division for three years.
Seems I spent my entire four years
in the Navy caring for air launched
guided missiles in and out of the
storage cans! |
