U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CVA-62
Medical Department
From the frustrating maintenance of health records
or the daily routine of sick call, to the exacting
requirements of the pharmacy and the lab, to the
steady hand and skill of the surgeon, the health
and the well being of the crew rests with the
dedicated officers and corpsmen of "H Division".
To accomplish this, general medical services are
provided for the sick and injured. The medical
facilities include two hospital wards for a total
of an 80 bed capacity and a complete operating
room. Specialized services such as a laboratory,
pharmacy, physical exams, eye examinations
x-ray, and support the effort to provide
the high standard of medical care.
The medical staff for the 1971-1972 Mediterranean
Cruise, consisted of 4 doctors and 40 hospital
corpsmen, most of whom have technical specialties.
Much of the work of the medical Department is the
prevention of illness and injury. This is accomplished
by training in first aid and personal hygiene and
by assisting the ship maintain good sanitation
and industrial safty practices.
