 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CV-62
 "Conserve water . . . take a Navy Shower"

The very fact that hot water is available for theuse of INDEPENDENCE crewmembers when
they want it is one of the reasons that
M Division is so important to the ship.

More important than just shower water, thisdivision has the responsibility for the
operation, repair and maintenance of the
 main steam propulsion engines, steam
 turbine electric generators, and
 fresh water distilling plants.

Located in each of the four main machineryspaces, the main engines receive 1200 PSI
superheated steam from the boilers and use it to
generate up to 70,000 hp to turn each of the four
screws. On days when there is no "natural wind,"
the main engines can propel the ship with
enough force to create up to 30 knots of
"man made " wind. Without this wind, the
launching and recovery of jet aircraft
 would be virtually impossible.

The eight electric turbogenerators areeach capable of producing up to
1500 KW of 450 volt, 69 HZ power.

M Division - owners and operators of the"INDY power and light company."
