. . . . . no bread, you say ? Let them eat cake !
Often times that may be the case, as the 75 men of S-2
prepare meals for 4,000 hungry crewmambers. A big
task for any restaurant, let alone one afloat, these
mess management specialists prepare four meals a
day and serve them an average20 hours a day,
seven days a week. 4,000 hungry faces need about
12 tons of groceries, 10,000 glasses of milk, 600
gallons of bug juice, and a ton and a half of
potatoes each day. 14 storerooms, 2 vegetable
preparation rooms, and a butcher and baker shop
round out the spaces these 75 men work in to keep
that many men happy. Add to that task a few cakes
for special occasions, and division parties, and you
have S-2 . . . . the Mess Management Specialists.

This was my first command and being
that I am in my third command now. I really do not think that it
will get better than those years. |

It was a great experience and a great crew.
It was an eye opener for a first termer. But I would not do a carrier again if I
had the option. It takes a special crew to run a carrier and that we always had.
No doubt! |
