Following recovery, aircraft must be spotted for refueling and Maintenance.
Maintaining a close vigil on all of these operations are the red shirts of the crash
and salvage crew (aka: repair 8) who must respond instantly to any emergency.

Was first enlisted man assigned to and worked in Primary Fly
Control (Pri-Fly )the Air Control Tower for the Air Boss,
CDR. Peddicord. Was featured on Dave Garoway's early morning
"Today" TV show. While we were still in-port in the Brooklyn
Navy Yard, I was the volunteer that climbed the mast carrying
the battery packs for the camerman, so he could take a
down-shot from the yardarm up high. Don't know what
the hell I was thinking at the time, but I did it. |

I was in RHODE ISLAND For training, then fire watch with
Yardbird welders before commission Jan 10th, 1959 the day
before my 20th birthday Started as a blue shirt working aft
of the island. Then worked in the mess hall after shakedown.
Started out as a line captain, but my smart mouth got me
demoted to the deep sink. Discharged Dec 12, 1959 docked
in Norfolk, VA. "MOVED TO OKLAHOMA"

Started as AA as a blue shirt in Fly 2. Transferred to
Repair 8 (Crash Crew), was hot suit man (asbestos type),
and ended up for 1 1/2 years as Repair 8 P.O. Worked
under Bosun Andrew Cooper (WO4) and Ensign Peters.
They were the Crash Officers while I was on board.
I was one of the 2 blue shirts that helped the corpman
carry Chief Lyons down a bomb elevator to sick bay.
That was my first time at sea on a CVA and it was an
eye opening trip. Was also a Tilly Driver |
