CVG-7 / CVW-7 U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE CVA-62
Home Base: NAS Sanford
VAH-1 Established 01 Nov 1955 NAS Jacksonville Redesignated RVAH-1 01 Sep 1964
Lost two men during Indy shakedown
cruise when their A3D got a cold cat shot.
Planes
A-3D Skywarrior - Douglas
RA5C Vigilante - North American
VAH-1 / RVAH-1 deployed most years between
1959 - 1967 on board the INDY with CVW-7
Disestablished 29 Jan 1979
22 Apr 59 - 30 Jun 59 Shakedown Gitmo
I joined VAH-1 before we moved to Sanford, FL.
We were then at Jax Naval air station in Jacksonville, FL.
I was there in Jax when Lt. Commander Morris brought in one of our planes on a
runway prepared with foam because, the Right Main Mount fell off on take off.
They flew around getting rid of fuel, then the other crew members bailed out.
Lt. Commander Morris brought that baby in by touching down the left main
mount first, then the nose wheel, then just touched the right stub, picked
it back up again, then repeated that procedure until the plane stopped.
I can remember that he exited the plane from the top hatch and shaking
his fist at the firemen who were spraying foam on not only the right main
mount stub but, just about all of the plane. I was one of those who
watched from the roof of a hanger.
And yes, I remember water hours aboard the USS Independence Shake Down Cruise.
And I remember what J.Shanks told me after his crash on the shake down cruise.
He said that Capt. Golden told Jon that if they ever had to ditch, wait until
after the second jolt before releasing his safety belt.
I was discharged just before the 1st. Med Cruise.
