VQ-1 "World Watchers" U.S.S. INDEPENDENCE
VQ-1 Established01 Jun 1955 – Homeported Iwakuni, Japan
It was the first squadron dedicated to electronic warfare.
In January 1960, VQ-1 moved to Atsugi, Japan
and redesignated Fleet Reconnaissance Squadron One.
In 1971, VQ-1 moved it’s home port to NAS Agana, Guam
and absorbed Heavy Photographic Squadron Sixty One (VAP-61).
With the close of NAS Agana in 1994, The VQ-1 home port
was changed to it’s current home port NAS Whidbey Island
Planes
P4M-1Q Mercator
A3D-1Q Skywarrior (added June 1955)
WV-2Q Super Constellations (replaced P4M-1Q1960)
redesignated EC-121M Super Constellation October 1962
EC-121M aircraft were operated and maintained into 1974.
A3D-2Q replaced the A3D-1Q then redesignated EA-3B
EP-3E ARIES (first received 1969 beginning replacement
of the of the Super Constellations. Completed in 1974)
(The last EA-3B Skywarrior retired in the late 1980’s)
