Plan “B”
.....
I made two cruises aboard Indy, one to Viet Nam and one to the Mediterranean. When we were in Viet Nam one of our port of calls was Hong Kong. Normally we had small liberty launches take us ashore for liberty. The reason for the liberty launches was the size of our ship. We have to anchor out in the harbor for most ports because of our size. Herein lies the rest of the story. In Hong Kong, instead of small launches, large ferryboats were sent out due to the size of the crew going on liberty. Moving slowly in line to board the last ferry for the next 2 hours I smartly saluted the chief on the brow proudly showing my liberty and ID card. Looking rather gruffly at me and exclaiming that I needed a haircut my hopes of an early liberty were now dashed before me. What is a sailor to do? Why be ‘industrious’ of course. ..... Reluctantly I turned around and went back down the hangar bay towards the barbershop, but wait how about plan ‘B’? There certainly was no time to get a haircut before this last liberty boat left for the next 2 hours. Slipping back to the end of the line I tucked my hair tightly up under my hat and headed for pending doom. Before the chief once again, I saluted smartly exclaiming, “how’s my shoeshine now chief”? The chief looked down at my gleaming shoes and returned my salute and said, “nice shine, sailor. Permission granted”. I almost cracked. Down the brow I went to the liberty boat. A true story. ..... My web sight is: http://www.mgte.com (2003 address). When you go there you will see, at the bottom of the page, a small picture that says, “BYE-BYE INDY”. Click on that and it will take you to the Indy page and from there you can find hundreds of pictures to see. If you have some pictures send them to me and I will scan them and send the pictures back to you. Or you can send them to me in digital. Give me the years you were on the Indy and I’ll be happy to put them up on the page with a click-on button with thumbnails. It won’t cost you a dime and it will add to the knowledge and database for the USS Independence.
