Roger Shaw B Div. 1961-1963
Memories of Roger Shaw as told by his wife and son. !
.....
Roger Shaw’s son, Dan Shaw, left a message on bulletin board in St. Augustine, FL in 2003. Roger passed
away in February 1992. Mom & I would like to hear from anyone that served and knew my dad. Send
email to: jedis_607@msn.com ..... These are memories Mrs. Roger Shaw wrote of Roger telling her of his service: ..... Roger’s time in service was as follows. He did his basic training at Great Lakes in Wakeagan, IL. Then most likely went to Virginia where they set off to the Mediterranean. My knowledge was he set foot in Greece, Turkey, Spain and France. ..... He and his buddies rode bikes up into the French Alps. He saw, and maybe even was on the French Riviera and saw the coast of Africa and sailed past the Rock of Gibraltar. I think he was over seas 1½ years. They were coming back to Virginia for a 30-day leave. When they got the call and headed to Cuba, where they sat on pins and needles on the verge of war and scared out of their wits!! ..... They later found out that there were Russian subs in the area also. It’s an understatement but he said the tension was awful. Everyone was out of their minds. Scared and on edge. No one could sleep, eat or do anything except be on deck watching and waiting. ..... I wish he’d written down all his feelings and thoughts during that time, but I’m sure he couldn’t have written anything at that time, but later it would have been interesting. ..... Hope this helps, Mom.
